A Change is Gonna Come

A couple of years ago, when I wrote my first post, I was so new to the blogging world. I didn't even realize people blogged. I had heard about a couple of blogs and thought, maybe I could use this as a tool to raise money for Cancer. I was running my second half marathon ever and trying to raise money/awareness for the American Cancer Society.

I am so excited that I started doing this because I have really enjoyed writing this blog. I don't know if that many people really read it, but it's kind of a fun way for me to write my thoughts out - it's like an online journal - that is edited so that I don't let all my crazy out :) - and it also has pictures because my private journal does not.

The reason I mention all of this is because I'm re-evaluating my blog, how it has evolved, what else would I like to change, etc. Where do I want my blog to go? Obviously, I don't make money with this so I really can do whatever I want. A couple of thoughts -

Design -

Last year, I changed the name of my blog to reflect more of my personality. I am sticking with it because I think it's really the best representation of me. I am definitely a yogi - someone on a quest to become a better person and incorporate loving, spiritual principles in my life - and I am definitely southern - college football, anyone? So the name, she's a staying.

BUT - I'd really love to change the look of this blog. I want to keep it simple so that people focus on the words vs the design, but I think it's a tad bit boring and if you know me, I love worldly things - so a bland pic  of Edisto Marsh is beautiful but not a true reflection of who I am. So, that's something I'll slowly be working on - making my blog a little livelier and a little worldlier.

Topics -

Obviously, I will continue talking about working out. I haven't been running as much because I got so burnt out but I have absolutely gotten to the point where I am ready to get back to it. It'll take me some time to get into a swing of things, but I miss running. It helps me clear my mind and get rid of extra energy. In my job, I sit at my desk 10 hours a day so I get a little manic sometimes. My husband is annoyed, so it's time to get out some energy!

DIY and Decor -

Now that I actually have a house that I want to put money and time into, I will be talking a lot about at home projects. I've got so much to do and I am enjoying every minute of it. So expect more pillow and furniture painting posts!

I am definitely going to work on my photography. I don't have a fancy camera or photoshop so that makes it difficult but I'm going to try just a little harder

Green Living -

I actually live a fairly green lifestyle. We recycle a lot - we're starting to compost - we only eat free range eggs and free range meat, etc etc. I think that I need to focus more on this because there is so much information out there that is different - it might be nice to see how one incorporates things into their daily life -

Food -

Since I love baking and eating, I will definitely be talking about food a lot.

Local Businesses -

I love Greenville and I think we actually have a lot of really cute local businesses. I've discussed some places like Tortilla Maria, etc. I am going to continue doing that and really highlight the great things in Greenville. Since most of my readers live here, why not talk about little hidden gems.

I am open to suggestions, so please let me know if there is anything you'd like to see!! Any design ideas - anything!!!

Lazy Post

So, I have lots of topics I could post about today but I'm being lazy and don't feel like adding lots of pics. So... first....

I am super excited about my post about football made it to the FRONT PAGE of Blogher. I couldn't believe it!!! Maybe that's my niche, lol!!!

second: this is what I did today...

We had an office lake day to reward our performance for the first half of the year. It was so awesome!! I love the lake. This was Lake Keowee.

third...

Tomorrow, I officially start my yoga teacher training. I am super excited about this as well. Yoga has been so awesome for me in so many ways.

1. It has helped me reduce injuries during training because it gets much deeper than just rubbing my leg with a stick

2. It has helped me signicantly reduce my anxiety/stress. I work in a high stress job and I got so caught in worrying about the future, regretting the past, etc. Yoga has really helped me learn how to focus in the present moment and be available for something greater. I'll probably talk about this in more depth later but I have become a much more mature, calm person that is more confident than I've ever been.

3. I think it's going to be a tool for me to help others. I am not sure how yet, but I feel like that's what's going to come of this.

SO... I can't wait to start tomorrow. We're  using these two books first:

I'll obviously be writing on how it goes!

Follow Friday...

I guess that's what you can call it. I mean, I know that's a twitter thing but I think we all know what it means. Or actually, I did not know what it meant for a really long time because I'm getting old and I'm not hip anymore, but you know what I'm saying.

I LOVE reading blogs and I sometimes wonder if I follow too many blogs because it's hard to keep up with them but I guess there aren't any rules so I can do what I want. The types if blogs I read are mainly fitness/running because that's what I do, but I like the occasional fashion blog and/or random blog and my favs are funny blogs. I wish that I was as clever/unique as these bloggers because they are so awesome and hilarious. Obviously, other people agree because their blogs are professional and I think they have other gigs going on including blogging. This #FF is focused on funny blogs:

Running Off the Reese's

*she is hilarious. She uses lots of celebs pics and has a way of telling an otherwise mundane story in a funny way. She also has some crazy stuff happen to her. Lastly, she runs slow like me and it makes me feel better about myself. Some of my fav posts of hers:

Ruff Ryders Fo Life
WTF Wednesday - What's My Problem
Wanting and Needing

Cake Wrecks

*I can't BELIEVE some of the pics the she comes up with. People are funny and it's even better when someone blogs about them

We Learned Good
A Little Late to the Meme
The First Censored Cake Wreck

And my new addition, thank you Peanut Butter Fingers,

The Bloggess

She is hilarious. That is all I can say. I want to be like her when I grow up. I know there are probably plenty but as of right now, these are the first three I've read...

I Swear, I don't usually post about my cat this much
Would You Like to Buy a Monkey
And That's Why You Should Learn to Pick Your Battles

I also like:
Hyperbole and a Half and The Oatmeal but they haven't been posting as much since they're both writing books right now.

Yoga pose wednesday..... NOT

it's actually:

courtesy of our friend over at Little Miss Daisy

This is my favorite blog right now. She is funny, she talks about working out but it's totally unique. Some blogs (like mine) just list out blah blah, this is what i did, but she tells it in a funny way. She likes to post celebrity pics although Hugh Grant made me feel guilty about liking celebrities this morning on the Today show (did anyone else see it). Somehow, I got off topic... what I'm saying, her blog is awesome and I look forward to reading it daily.

*pic from their website

It's delicious. I mean, I have been eating it like, 2-3 times per day. I do not know if that is good. I did read an article where it says we need 3 servings of whole grains and more fiber than most of us take in, so i'm assuming that means chocolate granola, right?

I honestly have been drinking these for a long time BUT i've never mentioned them because I kind of took them for granted. I get them at Whole Foods but this time, they were all out. So I grabbed one of those gatorade prime drinks. I usually meet my running group at 5:30 am mondays and wednesdays and I don't like to eat before I run but need the energy, so I just drink one of these and run and it's pretty good. This morning, i drank my gatorade thing and I was RAVISHING hungry at 6 am. Like, thought i was going to die hungry. i think it's because it was all sugar/calories and orgain has protein, but not the protein that makes you poop, just enough protein to keep you full longer than just straight up sugar. So, now that I realize how well they do before a run, I'm never taking them for granted again. I love them. love. them.

Since i'm new to swim/bike/run, I was wondering how exactly one would train for a triathlon, especially swim, and I've blogged about this before, but I LOVE the swim workouts it's given for the learn to swim program. I did the first one and it was perfect for me. It was challenging enough that I wasn't wearing swimmies and learning to doggy paddle, but it didn't start in straight up ironman mode so I was actually able to do it. If you're not a beginner, I dont know. If you are, I recommend this site.

This kind of seems like an advertisement today, but I just like reading about others' recommendations because i've learned about some new things that I never would've known about without blogs... so there we go!

Guest Blog - In the Pink and Green

WELCOME TO MY NEW BLOG NAME AND BLOG DESIGN. If you're wondering what happened to Earth, Wind and Fire - it's still here, just under a new name. I felt like it was time and I think this is more along the lines of what I'm looking for. I hope you likey!!

Today is special because we have a guest blogger!!! My friend Jane from In the Pink and Green is going to write about something special. I met Jane in late 2010 when she came to work with me at System 1. Jane is from Michigan and we instantly bonded over food, exercise and our love for the earth. We traded recipes and she introduced to me sites like Passionate Homemaking and books like

Super Natural Cooking

This book is cool because it helps you understand how to replace all your old, processed ingredients with organic products. It's also got some neat recipes.

Anyway, Jane is moving to Colorado and I. AM. DEVASTATED. So, in honor of her relocation, she is going to be talking about summer foods.

__________________________________________________________________________________

Hi everyone! I'm excited to be doing my first guest blog post for A Southern Yogi to start off the week. Wendi and I are co-workers, but our many common interests (such as blogging and eating!) are what helped us form a friendship. Since a common topic in both of our blogs is healthy cooking, I wanted to share a few of my favorite summer tips/recipes that are perfect for times when the temperature soars. (aka this week in Greenville, it's supposed to be 100 degrees tomorrow!)

-Use your slow cooker: People seem to tend to use their slow cookers primarily in the winter months for chilis and stews, but this is one of the most versatile and useful kitchen appliances that can actually really come in handy in the summer! It's perfect for those times that you don't want to heat up the house by turning on the oven or stand there slaving over a hot stove, and it's nice to come home from work to a meal that's all ready so you can go out for a swim or just be lazy :) One of my absolute favorite crock pot recipes is Vegetarian Black Bean Enchiladas; they're super easy and something everyone in your family will love. They're made by rolling veggies and black beans inside tortillas (I like to use whole wheat for even more fiber) and then covering them with salsa and a little cheese. They can easily be made non-vegetarian by adding some cooked chicken or ground beef, but I encourage you to try them the way they are first because they're suprisingly hearty and filling! (My husband, who normally doesn't like vegetarian dishes, loves these without meat!) This recipe is courtesy of one of my favorite food blogs, the kitchn, and you can find the full recipe here.

-Eat more fish: When it's hot out, the last thing I feel like is eating a super heavy dinner, so incorporating more fish in your diet is perfect for this time of year because it's light, yet filling and nutritious. I also love that it typically cooks very quickly, meaning less time stuck in the kitchen and more time to enjoy the summer! My dad is a big fisherman, so I've been fortunate to be able to eat fresh fish a lot of my life, however, now that I no longer live near my parents that means I have buy fish. I like Whole Foods because they typically have a great selection of fresh fish that is caught/farmed using sustainable practices. I got this wonderful fish recipe from my dad via Allrecipes, and it's a quick, delicious way to prepare fish for a summer dinner that has a little bit of a Mediterranean flavor.

One of my many bean salads from last summer :)
-Learn to love salads: One of the great things about living in the South is the abundance of fresh local produce available during the summer months, which can easily be transformed into a delicious salad, a perfect summer lunch or dinner. However, I tend to get sick of eating green salads too much, so when I want a salad with a little more substance my go to dish is my summer bean salad. I like to make it in the early part of the week, that way we can have it as a main dish for dinner one night (since it's so full of protein and fiber, it's actually very filling!), then we have leftovers for lunches/side dishes the rest of the week. I made a few swaps from a traditional bean salad recipe to make it a little healthier; here's the recipe I came up with:

Summer Bean Salad
Ingredients
  • 6 oz flax rice pasta (I used spirals from Eden Organic, they have tons of healthy pastas, many of which would be perfect in this salad)
  • 1 can of kidney beans, drained and rinsed
  • 1 can of black beans, drained and rinsed
  • 1 can of pinto beans, drained and rinsed
  • 1 can of garbanzo beans, drained and rinsed
  • 1 can of green beans, drained and rinsed (you could also use fresh green beans instead of canned)
  • 1 can of black pitted olives
  • 1 chopped red pepper
  • 1 chopped red onion
  • 1 tbs of fresh rosemary, roughly chopped
  • 1/3 cup good olive oil
  • 1/3 cup red wine vinegar
  • 2 tbs sugar
  • 2 tsp oregano
  • 1 tbs chopped garlic
  • 4 oz shredded parmigiano reggiano
Directions
What I love about this salad is that it's super easy! Start off by adding your pasta to boiling water and cook for 10 minutes. You'd rather the pasta be a little bit more on the al dente side then over cooked, otherwise it's going to get mushy in the fridge. Just a little note about why I chose to use flax pasta--since we weren't having meat in this meal, I wanted to make sure to pick a nutritionally sound pasta that would give the salad some extra protein. The flax rice pasta is both a good source of protein and fiber, as well as providing a good serving of essential fatty acids which are important since I'm trying to make our diet more heart healthy. I also like the fact that the pasta is a little bit darker because it gives some nice color to the salad. You could use any kind of small pasta shape in this salad, as well as trying other things like quinoa or kamut pasta.

Once the pasta is done, drain and let cool. Once pasta is cool, combine it in a large bowl with the next nine ingredients. What's great about a salad like this is that you can just use whatever you like (or have on hand at the time!), so feel free to experiment with different types of veggies and beans. I personally really like using the red pepper and the red onion because they add great color and flavor to the salad, and then I threw the olives in there because my husband loves them.

Next, wisk together the olive oil, vinegar, sugar, oregano, and garlic. Again, feel free to experiment with the dressing by substituting different oils, vinegars, and herbs. Pour over the salad, along with 2 oz of shredded parmigiano reggiano cheese, and combine until everything in the salad is well-coated. Top salad with the remaining cheese, and refrigerate. The more time that you refrigerate the salad, the more time the flavors are going to have to combine and it's only going to get better, so it's definitely something you could make a day ahead of time if you were having company.

One other note is that I didn't include any salt or pepper in this recipe; my hubby is really trying to watch his sodium intake, whereas I tend to like things super salty. I've been trying to just leave the salt out of recipes, that way we can salt/pepper our meals to taste individually.

This salad is great as the main course or a side dish, and it's packed with fiber and protein from the beans and pasta, as well as looking colorful and summery :)

I hope that y'all enjoy these recipes, and thanks to Wendi for letting me share them with you!

xoxo,

Jane

Why I Blog...

As someone who is relatively new to blogging and is still trying to find herself in this whole blogging world, I often get confused in what my purpose is for this blog. There are so many different examples of blogs as well as advice for helping your blog gain popularity.

As I continue to write about different subjects, I struggle to find my true voice. One thing about myself that I've learned is that while I can be confrontational in relationships, I don't usually like to rock the boat. I don't post about my political or religious beliefs here or on Facebook because I don't feel like dealing with the backlash of comments one can get from doing that. On the other hand, I don't want to be just another fitblogger who never discussed anything of any kind of substance. I wonder if my blog should be focused on training, food, travel, or a hodgepodge of it all. I've heard your blog should be focused but I've also heard you should write about your passion... IT'S ALL SO CONFUSING.

So I think my goal for the next couple of months is to find out where I want this thing to go. Maybe what I should do first is remember why I started blogging:

1. I wanted to use this as a tool to track my training for my second half marathon. I wanted to be able to keep a log of what I'm doing so that I can look back later on and see what worked and what didn't. I also wanted this to be a place where my friends and family could keep up with my training as well. It was a tool to help me in my fundraising for the American Cancer Society

2. I read an article about fitness bloggers and women who were writing about unhealthy eating habits. I wanted to be a healthy voice for people who could possibly be struggling with eating disorders whether it be from restricting in some way or from overeating. I myself, have struggled with an unhealthy relationship with food and exercise and I wanted to show that you can be healthy but still enjoy food and life.

Here's what's been holding me back:

To refer to my thoughts from above, I sometimes get nervous about expressing my true thoughts and feelings for fear of the response I'll get. I am born and raised in an area that is not very accepting of being "different". In high school, I was never super popular, I dressed weird and I was interested in things that were not of the norm. I don't think I was weird, I like to consider myself, "worldly" :). But the point of what I'm saying, I've learned that I can't express my true self because other people won't necessarily like it... so just be accommodating, mold yourself into whatever it is that seems to be the norm and stick with that. I'm coming to a point in my life where that just doesn't interest me as much. I am not saying that I'm going to announce my opinion on everything to everyone, but my blog that is my own, that I can do whatever I want with, is going to be my voice, pure and simple. If I feel like writing about the injustice that happens in Rwanda, I'm going to do it. If I want to write about how red onions give me gas, then I'm going to do that too. So, we'll see where this new idea takes me....

Bloggy bloggy blog blog....

I was going to post about a floral arrangement class I had the the other day but since blogger was down, I didn't. So I'd like to at some point but for now, I'd like to ask a question.

Let me first give you my training plan for the week. I've determined that I may be overtraining a bit as far as having too many super intense workouts which may be why my runs are suffering... SO... i'm keeping it to cross training with body weight style strength training. The plan for this week is:

Monday - 5-6 3 minute intervals with a 4:30 minute rest
Tuesday: Swim: I am researching tri training plans to see what i'll do BUT I am so basic, it'll probably be kicking drills and learning form
Wednesday: Hill repeats - 30 second and 60 second hill repeats
Thursday: not sure... this may end up being a rest day
Friday: Long run - 55 minutes with 90 strides 3 time torwards the end of the run
saturday: Bike ride??
sunday : rest or bike ride if I didnt ride bike saturday

____________________________________________________________________________________

Ok... on to the real topic. I am new to blogging. Well, I started back in October but didn't really get introduced to the blogging world until the beginning of this year. So, what I've been trying to do is get more followers. I've been commenting on other people's blogs, I've been participating in blog hops, I joined a couple of blogging networks.... and I've gotten hardly any new followers...

what does this mean?

Does it mean my blog sucks? Does it mean that I need to write about different things?

I'm trying not to get wrapped up in the amount of followers thing but I'd really like to interact with people more in the blogosphere and am wondering where my place is in it all...

Any suggestions?
